The Safe and Sound Protocol is an evidence-based intervention developed by Dr Stephen Porges (Polyvagal Theory). The SSP is an acoustic vagal nerve stimulation therapy shown to improve anxiety, auditory sensitivities, communication, and social engagement. It is a unique intervention targeting bottom-up (autonomic nervous system) processing to support emotional regulation and wellness.

The SSP Home Support Program for Children starts with you completing some initial background information forms in preparation for our initial consultation.

You will be emailed a history and questionnaire to complete

Session 1. Our initial session will be a time to learn about you and your family;  review the initial forms completed and decide on further assessments. We will establish goals to track as we work through the SSP.

Session 2. The second session is devoted to learning Polyvagal Theory and your autonomic nervous system. You will learn about fight, flight and freeze, and defensive behavioural responses. You will learn your own triggers and help to recognize defensive states (stress) in your child. Regulation strategies will be coved to help support the SSP process. We will cover how to implement the SSP at home.

Session 3. Mid-way consultation. We will review SSP program and additional Polyvagal Informed regulation strategies

Session 4. Post SSP Consultation. We will review goals and progress and plan forward. Some kids benefit from ongoing integration with the SSP Balance program.

SSP Support:  It is important that we communicate each day about your child's SSP sessions so listening session times can be prescribed accordingly. We will do this via email or text.

We will work collaboratively to determine the safest listening schedule to complete the protocol to optimize the best results.  The program is customized to each child's unique needs. The protocol is a total of 5 hours and can take 10 days to 1 month to complete. I often recommend an extended listening protocol of a total of 8 hours if the child's nervous system is suitable.

The SSP Home Support program for children includes 3.5 hours of clinical support: $195/hr

SSP access for Core Music: $300 per month

Additional Consultation sessions will incur additional fees.

Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) Additional Information

Over ten or more days, you will listen to the SSP-filtered music via headphones. You will access the protocol via an app (a link with instructions to download the app will be emailed to you). Listening sessions are 5-10 minute increments (to a maximum of 30 minutes/day). The length of time depends on how your child's nervous system manages the input. Sessions are combined with relaxation; coregulation strategies and play.

Although it is recommended to complete sessions over ten consecutive days, we work from a “less is more” policy. This means that you are closely supported throughout the protocol and monitored for signs such as fatigue or increased emotions that indicate your nervous system needs a break. This is a “Safe” before the “Sound” protocol, and it’s essential that you feel grounded before and throughout your session to maximize success.

How does the SSP work?

Based on Polyvagal Theory, the Safe and Sound Protocol is modulated vocal music designed to strengthen the neural network related to listening and feeling calm. Within this neural network is the very important vagus nerve. Our vagus nerve is responsible for your body’s “rest, regulation, restoration, and social engagement.” It also links the body to the brain and vice-versa.

When our vagus nerve is working well, we can regulate our thinking and feeling, and soften our sensations of stress, overwhelm, and anxiety. However, when our vagus nerve is out of sorts, our body can’t regulate, and we can experience BIG emotions, misread cues, and have heightened experiences of stress, overwhelm, and anxiety. Many kids have a heightened stress response due to the pandemic, family stressors,  and other stressors from social media.

The vagus nerve is also responsible for the healthy function of internal viscera such as the heart, stomach, intestines, liver, and spleen. These organs maintain internal wellness. During daily stress, the vagus restorative functions are comprised leading to gastrointestinal, immune, and brain fog....symptoms often co-occurring with mental health challenges.

Processed Music (PSL)

Computer altered vocal music (i.e., filtered music) designed to exaggerate the features of human prosody and hypothetically to exercise the neural regulation of the middle ear muscles. The specially adapted music uses the auditory pathway as an access point to the neural network and is intended to help people with auditory sensitivities extract human voice from background sounds and improve social communication.
